Waterford Crystal is meant to be used, not hidden in a cabinet. But it does need the right care. These tips come from a vintage Waterford pamphlet we found while unpacking a consignment at Dunn’s Attic in Ormond Beach.
How to Wash Waterford Crystal
Use warm (not hot) soapy water with mild soap flakes. Wash one piece at a time in a plastic basin or a sink lined with a rubber mat to prevent chips. Remove all rings and jewelry before handling — even a small stone setting can scratch the surface.
For decanters and narrow-necked pieces, swirl a small amount of coarse sand or uncooked rice with warm soapy water inside to loosen residue.
How to Dry Crystal Without Streaks
Rinse each piece in clean warm water after washing. Dry with one lint-free cloth, then polish with a second. Lint-free is important — fiber particles get trapped in the cut facets and dull the sparkle.
Never place stemware upside-down to drain. The rim is the weakest point and will chip under the weight of the glass.
How to Handle Crystal Stems Safely
When washing stemmed glasses, hold the bowl — not the stem. Gripping the stem while twisting the bowl creates torque at the join, which is where most breaks happen. Support the piece from underneath whenever possible.
What to Avoid
- Hot water and harsh detergents — both can cloud or etch the crystal surface permanently
- Dishwashers — the heat and vibration are too aggressive for fine crystal
- Metal faucets — an accidental knock against a tap is the most common cause of chips
